Isyana (also known as Sri Isyana Tunggawijaya) was an important queen who ruled the Medang Kingdom in East Java. She began her rule in 947 CE. She ruled together with her husband, Sri Lokapala. The Isyana dynasty, a powerful family that ruled Java around the 10th century CE, was named after her. Her father, Mpu Sindok, started this dynasty.

Who Was Queen Isyana?

Sri Isyana Tunggawijaya was the daughter of Mpu Sindok. He was a Javanese king who moved the capital city of the Medang Kingdom. He moved it from central Java to East Java. Not much is known about Queen Isyana's time as ruler. We do know that her husband was Sri Lokapala. He was a nobleman from the nearby island of Bali.

Important Events During Her Reign

One important record from the time of Queen Isyana and Sri Lokapala is the Gedangan inscription. This stone inscription is from the year 950 CE. It talks about a special gift from the royal family. They gave the villages of Bungur Lor and Asana to the Buddhist sangha. A sangha is a community of Buddhist priests or monks. This gift was for their community in a place called Bodhinimba.

Another important record is the Pucangan inscription. This inscription tells us who came after Queen Isyana and Sri Lokapala. Their son, Sri Makutawangsa Wardhana, became the next ruler.
