History of Quemado
How Quemado Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Spain gave up control of Puerto Rico to the U.S.
This meant that places like Quemado, which were part of Puerto Rico, became connected to the United States. Puerto Rico is now an "unincorporated territory," meaning it belongs to the U.S. but is not a state.
Population Changes Over Time
In 1899, the United States government counted the people living in Puerto Rico. This was part of a census, which is an official count of a population. The census found that 952 people lived in Quemado barrio at that time.
