About the Toumey Oak

The Toumey oak is a special plant. It can be a large bush or a small tree. Sometimes it loses its leaves in winter, like a deciduous tree. Other times, it keeps its leaves all year, like an evergreen plant. This is why it's called subevergreen.

Where It Grows

This oak tree lives in warm, sunny places. You can find it in the southwestern United States. It grows in Arizona, New Mexico, and a tiny part of Texas. This Texas area is near the Franklin Mountains north of El Paso.

It also grows south of the border in northwestern Mexico. There, you can find it in the states of Sonora and Chihuahua.

What It Looks Like

The Toumey oak has dark gray bark. It can look almost black. Its leaves are quite small for an oak tree. They are usually less than 3 centimeters (about 1.2 inches) long.

  • The top side of the leaves is green and shiny.
  • The underside of the leaves is a dull gray color.
