History of Queule
The Great Earthquake of 1960
Queule was greatly affected by a huge natural disaster in 1960. This event was known as the 1960 Valdivia earthquake and tsunami. It was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded.
Days after the earthquake and the giant ocean waves (tsunami) hit, a police officer in Queule reported many people were missing or had died. Later, historians Yoselin Jaramillo and Ismael Basso found that about 50 people in Queule were known to have died because of this earthquake and tsunami. The town worked hard to recover after such a big event.
