Quick's Hole is a narrow water passage, called a strait, located in Massachusetts. It is part of the Elizabeth Islands. This strait separates two islands: Nashawena Island and Pasque Island.
Quick's Hole is one of four important passages for boats. These passages connect Buzzards Bay and the Vineyard Sound. The other passages are Canapitsit Channel, Robinson's Hole, and Woods Hole.
What is Quick's Hole?
Quick's Hole is a busy waterway. It is the only passage between Vineyard Sound and Buzzards Bay that is deep enough for large boats. These boats need water at least 10 feet deep to pass safely.
Exploring the Seafloor
Scientists have studied the bottom of Quick's Hole. They found some interesting things there. There are huge sand waves, which are like underwater dunes. They also found very large glacial erratic boulders. These are big rocks moved by glaciers long ago. Plus, there are several shipwrecks that were not on any maps before.
Location and Size
Quick's Hole is located directly north of Menemsha on Martha's Vineyard. It is also directly south of New Bedford. The passage stretches about one and a half miles from north to south. At its widest point, it is about three-quarters of a mile across.
