The Story of Quinn

Early Days and the Post Office

The community of Quinn got its first post office on December 10, 1869. A man named Theodore Kath was the first postmaster, which means he was in charge of the post office. This post office helped people send and receive mail in the area. However, it only stayed open for a short time, closing its doors on September 15, 1873.

The Quinn Family and the Town's Name

The area was named after the Quinn family, who built their home on Gratiot Avenue in 1881. This family was important to the settlement, and that's how both the community and the local street, Quinn Road, got their names.

A Link to History: The Civil War and the Underground Railroad

Before the American Civil War began, there were also reports of activity related to the Underground Railroad in the Quinn area. The Underground Railroad was a secret network of safe houses and routes. It was used by enslaved African Americans to escape to freedom in the northern states or Canada.

During the Civil War, a military group called the 12th Michigan Infantry was formed. This group started in 1861 in a town called Niles, and it was led by a person named Colonel Francis Quinn.
