Clinton Township is a special kind of town called a charter township in Macomb County, Michigan. It's a northern suburb of Detroit, located about 22 miles (35 km) northeast of downtown Detroit. In 2020, Clinton Township had a population of 100,513 people. This makes it the most populated township in Michigan. It is also the 8th most populated community in the entire state.

History of Clinton Township
The first settlement in the area that is now Clinton Township was called Gnadenhuetten. It was started in 1782 by Reverend David Zeisberger. However, this settlement closed down in 1786.
How Clinton Township Got Its Name
The area was first organized as "Huron Township" on August 12, 1818. It was named after the Huron River. But there was another Huron River south of Detroit, which caused confusion. So, on July 17, 1824, the Michigan government changed the name of both the township and the river. They were renamed after DeWitt Clinton. He was a very popular governor of New York from 1817 to 1823. Governor Clinton was famous for helping to build the Erie Canal. This canal made it easier for many settlers to travel to Michigan.
Moravian Drive's Past
Moravian Drive is the oldest road in the township. It dates back to when Moravian missionaries settled there. They came to try and teach the local Native Americans.
Geography of Clinton Township
Clinton Township is located in the south-central part of Macomb County. The city of Mount Clemens, which is the main city of Macomb County, is surrounded on three sides by the northeast part of the township.
Land and Water Features
Clinton Township covers a total area of about 28.37 square miles (73.48 km2). Most of this area, about 28.03 square miles (72.60 km2), is land. The rest, about 0.35 square miles (0.91 km2), is water. The Clinton River is named after the community. This river is formed from three smaller branches right within the township. It then flows east into Harrison Township and finally into Lake St. Clair.
Parks and Green Spaces
The township has many parks for people to enjoy. One of the most well-known is George George Memorial Park.
Communities in Clinton Township
There are two smaller, unofficial communities within Clinton Township. These are called unincorporated communities.
- Broad Acres is in the southeastern part of the township. You can find it on M-3/Gratiot Avenue between 15 Mile and Quinn Roads.
- Cady is in the southwestern part, at Utica and Moravian Roads. It was started in 1833 by Chauncey G. Cady. He was a leader in the township and even a member of the state government. Cady had its own post office from 1864 until 1906.

Clinton Township has grown quite a bit over the years. In 2000, there were 95,648 people living there. By 2010, the population had grown to 96,796. The most recent count in 2020 showed that 100,513 people call Clinton Township home. This makes it a very large community.
The township is home to a diverse group of people. In 2010, about 82% of the population was White, and about 13% was African American. There were also smaller groups of Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander residents. About 2.37% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.

Clinton Township offers several places for community and cultural activities.
Italian American Cultural Society
The Italian American Cultural Society (IACS) is located in Clinton Township. Their building is on Romeo Plank Road. This center moved to its current spot in 2004. It helps keep Italian American traditions and heritage alive.
Libraries and Learning
Residents of Clinton Township can use the Clinton-Macomb Public Library. This library provides books, resources, and programs for everyone. The Walker Goldie Institute was also founded in the township in 2007. It was created to help educate young people through teaching and after-school programs. However, this organization is not active anymore.
Education in Clinton Township
Several school districts serve the students of Clinton Township. The main ones are Chippewa Valley Schools and Clintondale Community Schools.
- Chippewa Valley Schools has two high schools: Chippewa Valley High School and Dakota High School.
- Clintondale Community Schools has one high school: Clintondale High School.
