Quraysh facts for kids
Quraysh, also spelled Quraish, was a very important tribe in the ancient city of Mecca. This city is located in what is now Saudi Arabia. The Quraysh tribe was the main group in Mecca when the religion of Islam began.
The Quraysh tribe was also the family group that the Islamic Prophet Muhammad belonged to. However, many members of this tribe did not agree with his message at first. They were the main group that opposed his teachings. Over time, some members of the Quraysh did become followers of Islam.
Who Were the Quraysh Tribe?
The Quraysh tribe was powerful and well-known in Mecca. They were in charge of the Kaaba, a very old and important religious building in the city. Because they looked after the Kaaba, they had a lot of influence and respect. They also controlled much of the trade that passed through Mecca. This made them very wealthy and strong.
The Quraysh and Prophet Muhammad
Prophet Muhammad was born into the Quraysh tribe. Even though he was one of them, many Quraysh leaders did not like his new message of Islam. They worried that his teachings would change their way of life and reduce their power and wealth. Because of this, they strongly opposed Prophet Muhammad and his followers for many years.
Over time, as Islam grew stronger, the relationship between the Quraysh and the early Muslims changed. Eventually, Mecca was taken over by the Muslims. Many members of the Quraysh tribe then accepted Islam. They went on to play important roles in the early history of the Islamic world.
