A Look Back in Time
Puerto Rico became part of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. After this, Puerto Rico became an "unincorporated territory" of the U.S. This means it's a territory that belongs to the U.S. but isn't fully a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States government took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 676 people lived in the Río Grande barrio at that time. The population has grown over the years, as you can see in the chart below.

Understanding Local Areas
In Puerto Rico, a "barrio" is a main local area. These barrios are then divided into even smaller places. These smaller areas are called sectores (which means sectors in English).
Different Types of Sectors
The names for these sectors can be different. Some are just called "sector," while others might be called "urbanización" (like a housing development), "reparto," "barriada," or "residencial." Each name describes a slightly different type of community.
