What is Río Verde Like?
Río Verde is a very quiet and spread-out place. It covers a huge area of about 9,975 square kilometers (that's almost 3,850 square miles!).
Population and People
According to a census taken in 2002, Río Verde had 358 people living there. Most of these residents (295) were men, and 63 were women. This makes Río Verde an entirely rural area, meaning there are no big cities or towns, just small settlements and lots of open land. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Río Verde grew by a small amount, with 23 more residents.
How Río Verde is Governed
As a commune, Río Verde is a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years.
Local Leadership
From 2012 to 2016, the alcalde of Río Verde was Tatiana Vásquez Barrientos. She belonged to a political party called the Independent Democratic Union (UDI).
Representing the People
The people of Río Verde also have representatives in the national government.
- In the Chamber of Deputies (which is like one part of the country's parliament), Río Verde is part of a large area called the 60th electoral district. This district includes the whole Magallanes y la Antártica Chilena Region.
- In the Senate (the other part of the parliament), Río Verde is part of the 19th senatorial area, which also covers the entire Magallanes y la Antártica Chilena Region.
