Rabia Basri facts for kids
Rābia al-Adawiyya al-Qaysiyya (born 717 AD, died 801 AD) was a very important Muslim saint and a Sufi mystic. She was born in a city called Basra, so people also called her Rābia al-Basrī.
Her Early Life
Rābia was the fourth daughter in her family, which is why she was named Rābi’a, meaning "fourth." Her family was very poor. She loved God very much and was very devoted to her faith.
When Rābia's father passed away, she became an orphan. Sadly, she was captured by thieves and sold into slavery. During the day, she worked for her master. But during the night, she would spend her time in prayer to God.
One day, her master learned about her strong faith and how devoted she was. He was so impressed that he immediately set her free. He even decided to serve her instead!
Her Spiritual Journey
After gaining her freedom, Rābia became an ascetic. This means she lived a very simple life, giving up many comforts to focus on her spiritual journey and devotion to God.
Over time, many people came to follow her and learn from her. Even though Rābia helped many people and lived a life of poverty and challenges, she never asked for anything in return, not even from God.
Her Legacy
The name Rābia is now used to describe women who have reached the highest level of spirituality. She is seen as one of the most devoted Sufi saints and is highly respected by many.
