Rachel Clare Thomson is a smart professor who works with materials. She teaches at Loughborough University. She is an expert in understanding how different materials act, especially in very hot places like power plants. She also helps create new university courses and research projects.

Her School Days

Rachel Thomson studied science at the University of Cambridge. She went to Newnham College there. She earned two degrees, a BA in 1989 and an MA in 1992. In 1992, she finished her PhD, which is a very high university degree. She studied materials, focusing on something called carbide. Her research was supported by National Power and the Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC).

Her Career in Science

After getting her PhD, Rachel Thomson continued her research at the University of Cambridge. She worked as a postdoctoral research fellow. This means she was a scientist doing advanced research after her PhD. In 1995, she moved to Loughborough University. She became a lecturer, which is a university teacher. She quickly moved up in her career:

  • In 2002, she became a full professor.
  • In 2006, she became the Director of the Materials Research School.
  • In 2011, she became the Head of her department.
  • In 2015, she became the Dean of a big school at the university.
  • Since 2016, she has been a Pro Vice-Chancellor of Teaching. This means she helps lead the university's teaching programs.

Her research has received funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Awards and Special Recognitions

Rachel Thomson has received many awards for her work:

  • In 2018, she was named the East Midlands Inspirational Female Leader of the Year. She also won the Outstanding Woman in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) award.
  • In 2018, she became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng). This is a very high honor for engineers in the UK.
  • In 2009, she became a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
  • In 2005, she received the Rosenhain Medal from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
  • In 2003, she got a special fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
  • In 1994, she won the E.W. Mueller Outstanding Young Scientist Medal.
