Rachel de Queiroz (born November 17, 1910 – died November 4, 2003) was a very important Brazilian writer. She was an author, a translator, and a journalist.

About Rachel de Queiroz

Rachel de Queiroz was born on November 17, 1910, in Fortaleza. This city is the capital of the state of Ceará, located in the northeastern part of Brazil. When she was a child, her family lived for a few years in Rio de Janeiro and Belém. Later, they moved back to Fortaleza.

She started her writing career in journalism in 1927. At first, she used a special writing name, called a "pen name," which was "Rita de Queiroz." She became famous very quickly when her first novel, O Quinze, became a big success in 1930. She wrote three more novels before moving to Rio de Janeiro in 1939. Rachel de Queiroz was also well-known for her "chronicles." These were short articles about current topics that she wrote for newspapers.

In 1964, she became Brazil's representative to the United Nations (UN). The UN is an organization where countries work together for peace and development. In 1977, she made history by becoming the first female writer to join the Academia Brasileira de Letras. This is a very important group of writers and thinkers in Brazil. She also won two major awards: the Camões Prize in 1993 and the Prêmio Jabuti.

Rachel de Queiroz passed away from a heart attack on November 4, 2003. She was in her apartment in Leblon, Rio de Janeiro. This was about two weeks before her 93rd birthday. A base for the Brazilian Marines, used in a UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti, was named after her.
