How RTVA Started
Broadcasting in Andorra began with a commercial radio station called Radio Andorra. It was on the air from 1939 to 1981.
Then, on October 26, 1989, the government of Andorra, called the General Council, decided to create a national broadcasting service. This meant they wanted their own TV and radio stations for the public.
- ORTA is Born: Because of this decision, a new organization was formed. It was called the Organisme de Ràdio i Televisió d’Andorra (ORTA).
- Radio Starts: In December 1990, ORTA launched its first radio station, Ràdio Nacional d'Andorra (RNA).
- TV Arrives: Andorra's first TV channel, Andorra Televisió (ATV), started broadcasting in 1995.
- Making Their Own Shows: At first, other companies made all the shows for RNA and ATV. But by 1997, ORTA began making all its own programs.
RTVA Today
On April 13, 2000, ORTA was replaced by the company we know today: Ràdio i Televisió d'Andorra S.A. (RTVA). RTVA took over both RNA and ATV. The government of Andorra provides money to RTVA, and they also earn money from advertising. The current director of RTVA is Juande Mellado.
RTVA has been a member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) since 2002. The EBU is a group of public broadcasters from many countries. RTVA even took part in the Eurovision Song Contest from 2004 to 2009.
RTVA has to work hard because people in Andorra can also easily watch TV and listen to radio stations from nearby France and Spain.
