Rafael Delgado is a small town and area (called a municipality) in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. It used to be known as San Juan del Río. This area is found in the mountains, about 140 kilometers (87 miles) from Xalapa, which is the capital city of Veracruz. The whole municipality covers about 39.48 square kilometers (15.24 square miles).

A New Name for the Town

How Rafael Delgado Got Its Name

Back in 1831, the area we now call Rafael Delgado was a small village named San Juan del Río. It officially became its own municipality then.

Later, on November 5, 1932, the name changed. The municipality was renamed Rafael Delgado. This was done to honor a famous writer named Rafael Delgado. He was born in Córdoba, a city not far from here.
