Rafael Gil (born May 22, 1913 – died July 10, 1986) was a famous Spanish film director and screenwriter. He made many movies during his long career.
His film La guerra de Dios (1953) won a special award called the Bronze Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1953. It also won best film and best director at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Other films like La noche del sábado (1950) and El beso de Judas (1954) were nominated for the top award, the Gold Lion, at the Venice Film Festival. His movie Let's Make the Impossible! (1958) was also nominated for a big award, the Golden Berlin Bear, at the Berlin International Film Festival. Rafael Gil won nine awards from the National Syndicate of Spectacle in Spain.
Gil was a very important director during the time of Francisco Franco in Spain. His later films, often made with writer Fernando Vizcaíno Casas, sometimes looked back at the years when Franco was in charge.
