Ragaa Al Geddawy (born September 6, 1934 – died July 5, 2020) was a famous Egyptian actress and model. She was loved by many and was one of the most important actresses in the Middle East. Her acting career lasted for over sixty years!

Career

Early Life and Start in Acting

Ragaa Al Geddawy was born in Ismailia, Egypt, on September 6, 1934. When she was young, she moved to the big city of Cairo. There, she lived with her aunt, who was the famous bellydancer and actress Taheyya Kariokka.

She went to Franciscan schools in Cairo for her education. After school, she worked in the translation part of an advertising company. Later, she started modeling. In 1958, she won the title of Miss Egypt. This helped her begin her acting journey.

Famous Roles

Ragaa Al Geddawy started acting in films in 1959. One of her first movies was Douaa Al-Kawrawan, also known as The Nightingale's Prayer.

In 1960, she appeared in the movie Ishaaet Hob (A Rumor of Love). She acted alongside famous stars like Omar Sharif and Soad Hosny. In this film, she played the friend of Samiha, one of the main characters.

She also starred in the comedy movie Al Forsan Al Thalatha (The Three Musketeers) in 1962. She played Huda, the daughter of a lawyer who inherits a nightclub.

In 1967, she was in Karamat Zawgaty (My Wife's Dignity). This movie featured other big stars such as Salah Zulfikar and Shadia.

During the early 1980s, Ragaa Al Geddawy also performed on stage. She acted in plays like Adab El Gawaz (Marriage Manners) and Naseeha Mokhlesa Lel Sayedat (An Honest Advise for Ladies). Both plays were shown in Cairo and starred Salah Zulfikar.

In 1987, she appeared in Al Beh Al Bawab (The Doorman). She acted with stars like Ahmed Zaki and Fouad el-Mohandes.

Later Career

As her career continued, Ragaa Al Geddawy started appearing more in television series. In 2006, she played the role of her aunt, Taheyya Kariokka, in the TV series Cinderella.

One of her last major roles was as Enayat in the popular Egyptian TV series Grand Hotel. This show came out in 2016 and was based on a Spanish TV series called Gran Hotel.

Her very last acting role was in a TV series called Lu'bat Al Nesyan (Forgetfulness Games) in 2020. She finished filming this show just a few days before she became ill.

Personal Life

Ragaa Al Geddawy married Hassan Mokhtar on November 22, 1970. Hassan Mokhtar was a famous goalkeeper for the Ismaily SC football team. They had one daughter together, named Amira.

Passing Away

Ragaa Al Geddawy passed away on July 5, 2020. She was 85 years old. She had been in medical isolation for 43 days at Abu Khalifa Hospital in Ismailia. She contracted COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Egypt.

Her funeral prayer was held inside the hospital. Her body was then taken to the family cemetery in Cairo.

Tributes

Many people shared their sadness after Ragaa Al Geddawy passed away. The famous Hollywood star Jean-Claude Van Damme shared a picture of himself with her on Instagram. He wrote that he had met her just a few months before she died.
