Ragged Point is a special piece of land that sticks out into the ocean. It's called a headland. You can find it on the California Central Coast. This area is at the southern end of a famous place called Big Sur. It's located in the northern part of San Luis Obispo County. The Ragged Point Inn and Resort is also in this area. Like much of Big Sur, it has amazing cliffs by the sea, sandy beaches, and fun hiking trails.

What is Ragged Point?

Ragged Point is in the northwestern part of San Luis Obispo County. It's about 7 miles (11 km) north of the Piedras Blancas Light Station, which is a lighthouse. This rocky headland marks the southern edge of a small bay. Here, a creek called San Carpoforo Creek flows into the Pacific Ocean.

Beaches and Nature

Just north of the rocky point, there's a short beach called Ragged Point Beach. A large rock separates it from San Carpoforo Creek Beach. The area around Ragged Point is full of amazing wildlife. You might see elephant seals resting on the shore. Sea otters play in the water. Many different birds also live here, like the Western snowy plover.

The Ragged Point Inn and Resort

The Ragged Point Inn and Resort is a popular place to stay. It's not right on the headland itself. Instead, it's about 1.8 miles (2.9 km) north on Highway 1. This resort was started in the late 1950s by Wiley and Mildred Ramey. Their land used to be part of the large Hearst Ranch.

Today, the resort has a hotel, a restaurant, and places for weddings. It also gives visitors access to Young Creek Beach. This beach has unique black sand. To get there, you have to hike down a very steep cliff that is about 400 feet (120 meters) tall.
