Ragtown, Nevada, is a Churchill County ghost town. It was once a busy trading post that started in 1854, located west of Fallon.

The Story of Ragtown

Imagine pioneers traveling across a tough desert in 1854. They were tired and dusty! They found a place to rest by the Carson River, about 12 miles from where Fallon is today. This spot became known as Ragtown.

Why "Ragtown"? Well, these travelers often had worn-out clothes. After washing their clothes, they would hang the "rags" on bushes to dry. So many rags were seen that the place got its name! Early visitors described it as a few simple huts made from poles and old canvas.

Ragtown's Post Office

Ragtown even had its own post office! A post office is where people send and receive mail. The Ragtown post office was open from May 14, 1864, to May 29, 1867. It opened again later, from May 5, 1884, to April 19, 1887.

Leeteville: A Nearby Town

Another post office nearby was called Leeteville. It was named after James Leete. This post office was open from January 28, 1895, to June 12, 1907. The first person in charge of the Leeteville post office was Esther M. Leete. The original Ragtown was located where Leeteville later stood.
