Clans Join Forces
The raid began when Ewen Cameron, the leader of the Clan Cameron, joined forces with other clan leaders. These included Alexander MacDonald of Lochalsh and the leader of Clan Ranald. The Chattan Confederation also joined them.
The Attack on Ross-shire
These allied clans then launched an attack into a region called Ross-shire. During this raid, they fought against the Clan Mackenzie, who lived in Kintail. The attacking clans then moved from Lochaber to Badenoch.
Storming Inverness Castle
After that, the clans marched to Inverness. They attacked and took over Inverness Castle. The Clan Mackintosh then placed their own soldiers inside the castle to control it.
Why the Raid Happened
The MacDonald Lords of Lochalsh were very influential at this time. They expected other clans to follow them in battle. The MacDonalds of Lochalsh were part of the larger Clan Donald. Their chief was Domhnall Dubh. He claimed the title of the Lord of the Isles. This important title had been taken away from his grandfather by the king. The raid was part of a bigger struggle for power in the Highlands.
