Raimundo da Mota de Azevedo Correia (born May 13, 1859 – died September 13, 1911) was a famous Brazilian poet. He was also a judge and a magistrate, which means he worked in the legal system. He was known as one of the "Parnassian Triad" alongside two other important poets, Alberto de Oliveira and Olavo Bilac.

He helped start the Brazilian Academy of Letters. This is a very important group for writers in Brazil. He held the 5th seat in the Academy from 1897 until he passed away in 1911.

Who Was Raimundo Correia?

His Early Life and Education

Raimundo Correia was born on a ship near São Luís, in Maranhão, Brazil. His father, José da Mota de Azevedo Correia, was a desembargador, a type of high-level judge. His mother was Maria Clara Vieira da Mota de Azevedo Correia.

Raimundo went to high school at the Colégio Pedro II in Rio de Janeiro. Later, in 1882, he studied Law at the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de São Paulo. After finishing his studies, he became a successful judge. He worked in both Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.

His Journey as a Poet

Raimundo Correia published his first book of poems, Primeiros Sonhos (First Dreams), in 1879. The poems in this book were greatly influenced by Brazilian Romantic poets. These included writers like Fagundes Varela, Casimiro de Abreu, and Castro Alves.

However, Raimundo Correia later joined a different style of poetry called Parnassianism. He showed this new style in his 1883 book, Sinfonias (Symphonies). Parnassianism focused on perfect form and clear, objective descriptions. Some of his poems are also seen as early examples of the Symbolist movement in Brazil. Symbolism used symbols and hints to express ideas and feelings.

His Final Years

Raimundo Correia passed away in 1911 in Paris, France. He had traveled there to seek treatment for his illnesses.
