The Ralli Museum is actually two special art museums located in Caesarea, Israel. They are part of a bigger group of Ralli Museums around the world. These museums were created by Harry Recanati. His goal was to show amazing art from Latin America. They also help us remember important history. This includes the time when Jewish people were forced to leave Spain and Portugal. This happened during a period known as the expulsion of Jews from Spain and Portugal. They also keep alive the history and art of the Jewish community from Thessaloniki, which faced terrible times during the Holocaust.

A Look Back: Why the Museums Were Built

The Ralli Museums in Caesarea are made of two separate collections. They are called Ralli 1 and Ralli 2. Harry Recanati started these five non-profit Ralli Museums. His goal was to share modern art from Latin America. He also wanted to remember the sad time when Jewish people had to leave Spain and Portugal. This happened during a period known as the Inquisition. The museums also work to preserve the history and art of the Jewish community from Thessaloniki. This community was almost completely destroyed during the Holocaust.

Ralli 1 Museum: Art and History

The Ralli 1 Museum building is very large. It covers about nine thousand square meters. It has five exhibit halls. The building is designed in a Spanish Colonial architecture style. It is surrounded by a huge garden of sculptures, covering 40 hectares.

What You Can See at Ralli 1

The museum has sculptures by famous artists like Salvador Dalí and Auguste Rodin. You can also find many Latin-American sculptures and paintings. The collection includes works by artists such as Arman, André Masson, and Gogy Farias.

Ralli 1 also has a permanent collection of old objects. These were found in and around Caesarea. They come from different historical times. These include the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, and Crusader periods. This special collection was put together with help from the Smithsonian Institution. It even traveled to the USA and Canada in 1988 and 1989 for exhibitions.

Ralli 2 Museum: Spanish Jewish Heritage

The Ralli 2 Museum is dedicated to the history of Spanish Jewry. These are Jewish people who lived in Spain and Portugal. The building itself is built in a beautiful Moorish Style.

Inside Ralli 2

At the center of Ralli 2, there is a lovely courtyard. It has a fountain surrounded by 12 lions. This design is similar to the famous Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. In the courtyard, you can also see marble statues. These statues honor important Jewish thinkers. They include Yehuda Halevi, Maimonides, Spinoza, and Ibn Gabirol. The museum's permanent collection features paintings by European artists. These works are from the 16th to 18th centuries. They often show themes from the Bible.
