Ralph Assheton (general) facts for kids
Ralph Assheton (born 1596 – died February 17, 1650) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons from 1640 to 1649. The House of Commons is a key part of the English government. He also served as a general in the Parliamentary army. This army fought during the English Civil War.
Early Life and Education
Ralph Assheton was the oldest son of Sir Richard Assheton. His father was from Middleton. Ralph was also a descendant of an earlier important person, Ralph de Ashton.
Young Ralph started his studies at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge in May 1614. He also joined Gray's Inn in May 1614. Gray's Inn was a place where people learned about law. He earned a Master of Arts (MA) degree from Cambridge in 1615. He also studied at Oxford University in 1616.
Political and Military Career
In November 1640, Ralph Assheton was chosen as a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented Lancashire in what was called the Long Parliament. This was a very important time in English history.
Assheton strongly supported the Parliament. He was a main leader of the Presbyterian group in Lancashire. During the English Civil War, he became a high-ranking officer. He was a colonel-general in the Parliament's army. He was also the main commander of the Parliament's forces in Lancashire. In 1648, he was no longer a member of Parliament.
Later Life and Legacy
Ralph Assheton passed away when he was 54 years old. You can find a special metal plaque, called a monumental brass, for him. It is in the Church of St Leonard, Middleton. This brass is very unique. It is the only one in the UK that shows a Civil War officer in full armor.
Ralph Assheton's oldest son was also named Ralph Assheton. He became the first baronet of Middleton. This happened after the king was restored to power.
