Ralph Weston Sturges (born December 25, 1918 – died October 1, 2007) was an important leader of the Mohegan tribe in America. He played a big part in getting the Mohegan people officially recognized by the United States government in 1994. This recognition was a huge step for the tribe. Ralph Sturges also helped create and build the famous Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. Because of his dedication and leadership, he was known as the "chief for life" for his tribe.

The Mohegan tribe lives in Montville, Connecticut. Today, about 1,700 people are part of the tribe. Their special land, called a reservation, is in eastern Connecticut, right by the Thames River near Uncasville. Thanks to the success of their casinos and other businesses, which Chief Sturges helped start, the Mohegan tribe is one of the most successful Native American tribes in the United States.

Ralph Sturges' Early Life

Ralph Sturges was born on December 25, 1918, in New London, Connecticut. He had strong ties to his Mohegan heritage through his great-grandmother, Emma Baker. She was a Mohegan medicine woman and an activist in the early 1900s. She worked hard to get the state to address land issues for the Mohegan people.

Military Service and Awards

During his life, Ralph Sturges served in the U.S. military. He was part of an intelligence team during World War II in places like New Guinea and the Philippines. For his brave service in the war, he was given the Bronze Star, a special award for military heroes.

Ralph's Diverse Career

Before he became deeply involved in Mohegan tribal matters later in his life, Ralph Sturges worked in many different jobs. He helped people during disasters as a coordinator for the Salvation Army. He also worked as a delivery person for an armored car company, carrying important payrolls.

A Talented Sculptor

Ralph Sturges was also a very talented marble sculptor. His beautiful artworks were displayed in important places, including the Connecticut State Capitol building and other public spaces. After he passed away in 2007, Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell shared a message. She said that Ralph Sturges would always be remembered not just as a wise leader, but also as a skilled artist.
