The Thames River in Connecticut is a short river in the U.S. state of Connecticut. It flows south for about 15 miles (24 km). This river is not the same as the famous River Thames in England.

The Connecticut Thames River starts where two other rivers meet. These are the Yantic River and the Shetucket River. They join together in a city called Norwich. From there, the Thames River flows south. It passes by the cities of New London and Groton. Finally, it empties into the Long Island Sound.

Historic Forts Along the River

The mouth of the Thames River forms the harbor for New London. Two old and important forts are located here. These forts are now Connecticut State Parks. They help tell the story of the area's past.
