Ralph the Staller (also known as Ralf the Englishman) was an important noble and landowner in England. He lived during a big change in English history, before and after the Norman Conquest in 1066. He died around 1069 or 1070.

Ralph first appeared in official documents from Brittany, a region in France. In these papers, he was called "Ralph the Englishman." His son, Ralph de Gael, later inherited a large area of land there.

Who Was Ralph the Staller?

Ralph's exact background is a bit of a mystery. He was definitely in England before 1066. However, his name, Ralph, was more common on the European continent than in England.

Some old records say he was born in Norfolk, England. But other writers, like William of Malmesbury, said he was from Brittany. Modern historians think his father might have come to England with Emma of Normandy in 1002. She married King Aethelred II at that time. It's thought his mother was English, which would explain why some of his relatives had English names.

Working for the King

Ralph was an important person in the court of King Edward the Confessor. The king's court was like his group of advisors and close helpers. Ralph was sometimes called a "squire," which meant he was an important royal official. He also held titles like "seneschal" and "courtier."

He had a very important military job called "staller." This role was similar to a "constable" in other countries. A staller was in charge of the king's horses and also had military duties.

Ralph often signed official documents for the king. For example, in 1053, he signed a charter as a staller. He also helped with a document between Leofric, Earl of Mercia and Lady Godiva. This document gave land to a monastery at Stow Minster in Lincolnshire.

Ralph also supported religious places. He was a patron of the Abbey of Saint-Riquier [fr] in France. He also supported the Abbey of St Benet de Holme in Norfolk, England.

After the Norman Conquest

Ralph survived the Norman Conquest of 1066. This was when William the Conqueror invaded England and became king. Ralph managed to gain William's favor.

King William made Ralph the Earl of East Anglia. This meant he was a powerful ruler over a large area of eastern England.

Ralph was married and had several children. His main heir was Ralph Guader, who took over his earldom. Another son was named Hardouin. Ralph is also thought to be related to Hereward the Wake. Hereward was a famous English rebel who fought against the Normans.
