Datuk Ramli bin Ibrahim was born on May 20, 1953. He is a famous Malaysian choreographer and a classical ballet dancer. He started the Sutra Dance Theater and the Sutra Foundation. These groups help people learn many different traditional dances. In 2018, the Government of India gave him a special award called the Padma Shri. This was for his amazing work in a dance style called Odissi.

Ramli's Early Life and Learning
Ramli Ibrahim was born in Kajang, Selangor, in Malaysia. His father, Ibrahim bin Haji Mohmmad Amin, was a school teacher. His mother, Kamariah, worked as a secretary for a women's group. Ramli grew up in a family that was open-minded. He even said in an interview that he could sing!
Ramli went to the University of Western Australia to study mechanical engineering. While he was there, he also joined the Australian Ballet School in Melbourne. This is where he learned ballet. He met another Malaysian dancer named Chandrabhanu there. Ramli also learned a dance style called Bharatanatyam from a teacher named Adyar Lakshman. Later, he moved to Chennai, India, to keep learning from Lakshman. He studied alongside other well-known dancers.
Ramli then began to learn Odissi dance. He studied this style in New Delhi, India, with a teacher named Deba Prasad Das.
Ramli's Dance Career
After his studies, Ramli came back to Malaysia in 1983. He then started the Sutra Dance Theater in Kuala Lumpur. This theater helps to show off Malaysian art. It works to promote Malaysian art both in Malaysia and around the world. The theater is especially known for its focus on the Odissi dance. This dance style comes from the state of Odisha in India. In 2007, he also created the Yayasan Sutra in Malaysia.
Awards and Honors
The Padma Shri Award
In 2018, Ramli received the Padma Shri award. This is one of the highest honors given to artists and others by the Government of India. He received it for his work in Odissi and Bharatanatyam dance. He has been involved in dance for over 40 years. He got the award at the Rashtrapati Bhavan from President Ram Nath Kovind. Ramli wore a traditional black Baju Melayu and a songkok for the ceremony.
Ramli said that the award was a big boost for his Sutra Foundation. He hopes it will help create more cultural connections between Malaysia and India. He believes their efforts are driven by a love for Indian arts.
