Ramon Berenguer IV (also known as Ramon Berenguer III) was an important ruler in the 12th century. He was born around 1158 and passed away on April 5, 1181. He held the title of count of Cerdanya from 1162 to 1168. Later, he became the count of Provence from 1173 until his death.
Early Life and Family
Ramon Berenguer was born with the name Peter. He was the third son of Raymond Berengar IV of Barcelona, who was a powerful count, and Petronilla of Aragon, who was a queen.
When his father died, Ramon Berenguer received the region of Cerdanya. This area included important cities like Carcassonne and Narbonne. However, he gave up this territory to his younger brother, Sancho, in 1168. He never actually ruled these lands himself.
Becoming Count of Provence
In 1173, his older brother, Alfonso, gave him the title of Count of Provence. This made Ramon Berenguer a significant ruler in that region.
Conflicts and Death
In 1176, Ramon Berenguer joined forces with his brother Sancho. Together, they took control of the city of Nice from Genoa. This was an important victory for them.
After this, Ramon Berenguer became involved in conflicts with other powerful lords. He went to war against the rulers of Languedoc and the count of Toulouse. These were often disputes over land and power.
Sadly, Ramon Berenguer's life ended on April 5, 1181. He was killed by men loyal to Adhemar of Murviel near the city of Montpellier. After his death, the region of Provence was passed on to his brother Sancho.
