Ramon Menezes: His Football Journey
Playing Career: From Young Talent to Star
Ramon was born in Contagem, Minas Gerais, Brazil. He started his football journey at a young age, joining the youth team of Cruzeiro. He played his first professional game for Cruzeiro on October 18, 1987. He was just 15 years old!
He scored his first goal for the senior team on March 17, 1988. Ramon played more regularly in 1990. After that, he was loaned to Bahia twice, in 1992 and 1993.
Becoming a Top Player
In 1994, Ramon moved to Vitória. He quickly became a key player for the team. In 1995, he scored an amazing 25 goals in the Campeonato Baiano league, which was his best scoring record in a single season.
His great performance at Vitória led him to play in Europe. He joined Bundesliga team Bayer 04 Leverkusen in Germany. In 1996, he returned to Brazil and signed with Vasco da Gama. This was a very successful time for him. He helped Vasco da Gama win many important titles:
- The 1997 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A (Brazilian League)
- The 1998 Campeonato Carioca (Rio de Janeiro State League)
- The 1998 Copa Libertadores (South America's biggest club competition)
- The 1999 Torneio Rio – São Paulo
In 2000, Ramon moved to Atlético Mineiro. He scored the winning goal for them to claim the Campeonato Mineiro title that year. He then played for Fluminense on loan in 2001. He became well-known for scoring goals from free kicks.
Ramon went back to Atlético Mineiro before rejoining Vasco da Gama in 2002. He scored 15 goals in 17 league games, helping his team avoid being moved down to a lower league. In 2003, he moved to Japan to play for Tokyo Verdy.
He returned to Fluminense in 2004 but had some injuries. He then played for Botafogo and had a third time playing for Vasco da Gama in 2006. He also played for Al-Gharafa SC in Qatar and Atlético Paranaense in Brazil.
In 2008, Ramon returned to Vitória for another period. He left the club in 2010. In 2011, at 38 years old, he joined Joinville. He helped them get promoted from the Série C (third division). He played his last professional games for Caxias and Cabofriense before retiring in 2013.
Playing for Brazil's National Team
Ramon was called up to play for the Brazilian national team in the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup. He played his first game for Brazil on May 31, 2001, in a 2–0 win against Cameroon. He scored his first and only goal for Brazil on June 7, 2001, in a game against France.
From Player to Coach
After he stopped playing, Ramon started his coaching career. He first worked as an assistant coach at his former club, Joinville.
Coaching Different Teams
In 2015, he became the head coach of ASEEV. He led them to win the third division of the Campeonato Goiano league. He then coached Anápolis and Guarani-MG in 2016. He also returned to Joinville as their manager that year.
Ramon coached Anápolis again in 2017 and Tombense in 2018. In 2018, he rejoined Vasco da Gama, first as an assistant coach. In March 2020, he became the head coach of Vasco da Gama's main team.
He later coached CRB in 2020 and Vitória in 2021.
Coaching Brazil's Young Talent
On March 7, 2022, Ramon was chosen to coach the Brazil under-20 national team. He led them to win the 2023 South American U-20 Championship, which is a big tournament for young players in South America.
Because of his success, he was named the interim (temporary) manager of the main Brazilian national team on February 15, 2023. This happened after the previous coach, Tite, left his job after the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He also coaches the Brazil U23 and Brazil U17 teams.
