Sir Ramon de la Sota y Llano (born January 20, 1857, in Castro Urdiales – died August 17, 1936, in Getxo) was an important Basque lawyer and businessman. He was also a strong supporter of Basque nationalist ideas. Ramon was the father of Ramon de la Sota Aburto and Manuel de la Sota "Txanka." King George V of Britain even made him a knight, which meant he could be called Sir.

At the start of the 1900s, he became a major supporter of the Basque Nationalist Party.

Ramon's Early Life

Ramon was born to Alejandro de la Sota and Alejandra de Llano. His father was from Portugalete, and his mother was from Castro Urdiales. He lived in his family's home in Muskiz for 20 years.

In 1868, he moved to Bilbao before the Second Carlist War began. In Bilbao, he studied at the Instituto Vizcaino. Later, he earned a law degree from the Central University of Madrid.

Ramon's Career and Businesses

When Ramon returned to Bilbao, he started his professional life. He took charge of a group called the Sociedad Euskalerria, which supported special local laws called "fueros." This group was also known as the euskalerriacos.

He helped this group join the Basque Nationalist Party. This move helped the party become more practical in its political goals between 1898 and 1902.

During the early 1900s, Bilbao was growing fast with new industries. Ramon's businesses, especially in shipbuilding and mining, became very successful. He built one of the largest fortunes in the Basque Country and all of Spain.

Ramon de la Sota married Catalina de Aburto. Catalina was the daughter of a well-known trader in Bilbao.
