Portugalete is a lively town in northern Spain, located in the Basque Country. It sits west of the big city of Bilbao, right where the Estuary of Bilbao meets the sea.
This town is home to about 45,000 people and is part of the larger Bilbao area. It's quite small in size, only about 3.21 square kilometers, which means lots of people live close together! Portugalete was founded a long time ago, in 1322, by a lady named María Díaz de Haro.
Even though its name sounds like "Portugal," the town isn't near the country of Portugal. Its name actually comes from a Basque phrase, "Portu-Ugaldeta," which means "edges of the port."

Exploring the Vizcaya Bridge
One of the most famous sights in Portugalete is the Vizcaya Bridge. This amazing bridge was opened in 1893. It's a special kind of bridge called a transporter bridge.
Instead of cars driving over the top, a hanging ferry carries them across the River Nervión. This ferry moves from Portugalete to the town of Getxo on the other side. It works using a system of wires and wheels that run on tracks high above.
The Vizcaya Bridge is so unique and important that it was named a World Heritage Site in 2006. This means it's recognized as a special place that should be protected for everyone to enjoy.
Fun Festivals and Events
Portugalete loves to celebrate! The town has several exciting events throughout the year.
San Roque Festivals: A Summer Celebration
The biggest celebration is the San Roque Festivals. These officially last for four days, from August 14th to 17th. The main party days are August 15th and 16th, which is San Roque Day.
- On the morning of August 15th, people gather outside the Town Hall.
- They sing a special song called "La Diana Portugaluja" to get ready for San Roque Day.
It's a time for fun, music, and community spirit!
