Story Summary
Ramona is getting older and facing new changes. The story happens a few months after Ramona Quimby, Age 8.
Staying Home Alone
Ramona and Beezus convince their parents to let them stay home alone after school. They want to prove they are responsible. One day, they argue about Beezus's skin problems. The next day, they find their cat, Picky-Picky, has died. They forgive each other and handle the cat's funeral themselves. Their parents then agree they are old enough to take care of themselves.
Ramona is very happy not to go to the Kemps' house anymore. She doesn't have to deal with Howie's little sister, Willa Jean. She also avoids Howie's grandmother, who Ramona feels always makes her watch Willa Jean. Beezus says the Kemps' house "smells like old soup." Howie's rich Uncle Hobart is also there. He likes to tease kids, and Ramona doesn't like that.
New Family Changes
More changes are coming for the Quimby family. Mr. Quimby is almost done with college. Everyone hopes he will get a teaching job nearby. This is important because Mrs. Quimby is expecting their third child. She plans to stay home to care for the baby.
Beezus thinks having a baby will be wonderful. But Ramona realizes she won't be the youngest anymore. She isn't sure how she feels about becoming the middle child.
Summer and Celebrations
Summer arrives, bringing another big change. Aunt Bea and Uncle Hobart decide to get married! Beezus and Ramona are asked to be maids of honor. They only have two weeks to plan the wedding. By the wedding day, everyone in the neighborhood helps out.
Later, baby Roberta is born. Ramona realizes, along with her family, that she is "winning at growing up."
