Plot Summary
The movie follows Ramona Quimby (Joey King), a creative and adventurous third-grader. She often gets into funny trouble at school and at home. Her best friend is Howie (Jason Spevack).
Ramona's dad, Robert (John Corbett), loses his job. This causes the family to have money problems. Ramona tries to help by earning money, but her plans usually go wrong in funny ways. She sometimes embarrasses her older sister, Beatrice (Selena Gomez), by calling her "Beezus." This often happens in front of Henry Huggins (Hutch Dano), who delivers newspapers and is Beezus's crush.
Robert used to work in a storage company. Now he wants to try a creative career. This causes some arguments with his wife, Dorothy (Bridget Moynahan), who is also the girls' mom.
Ramona's aunt Bea (Ginnifer Goodwin) comes to visit. Aunt Bea is one of the few people who understands Ramona's unique personality. One day, Ramona accidentally paints Aunt Bea's old car. After this, Ramona stops trying to earn money.
The next day, Ramona has a school picture day. She accidentally cracks a raw egg in her hair! She also makes a disgusted face when the photographer asks her to say "Peas." This ruins her picture.
Ramona gets more worried when her classmate Susan (Sierra McCormick) tells her something sad. Susan's parents divorced after her dad lost his job. This makes Ramona scared that the same thing might happen to her family. She gets sick, and her dad has to pick her up from school. This makes him miss a job interview. But instead of being angry, Robert spends the rest of the day drawing a mural with Ramona.
Later, Ramona and Beezus try to cook dinner for their parents. But the pan catches fire while Beezus is talking to Henry on the phone. During the argument that follows, Henry hears Beezus say she loves him.
Still upset, Ramona goes to feed her cat, Picky-Picky. She is very sad to find that her cat has died. The sisters have a private funeral for Picky-Picky. This helps them make up after their fight.
Robert gets a job offer in Oregon. This makes Ramona's parents decide to sell their house. While the family is getting the garden ready for an open house, Ramona starts a water fight with the neighbors. This floods the neighbors' yard. It also uncovers a box that Hobart (Josh Duhamel) buried there years ago.
The box holds special memories from when Aunt Bea and Hobart were teenagers. They start to fall in love again, and Hobart asks Bea to marry him. Bea says yes, and the family starts planning a quick wedding.
Ramona is angry because she feels her aunt broke a promise not to get "reeled in." She runs home and goes to the attic. The floorboards break, and Ramona's legs dangle from the ceiling during the open house! After the open house, Robert scolds Ramona for acting immature. Ramona and her mom then tell Robert that he isn't being understanding enough. Robert leaves.
Then, Robert gets a phone call from Ramona's teacher, Mrs. Meachum (Sandra Oh). Feeling unwanted, Ramona decides to run away. Her mom helps her pack a suitcase. At a bus stop, Ramona opens the heavy suitcase. She finds that her mom made it heavy on purpose so Ramona couldn't go far. Inside, her mom packed a book of Robert's drawings of Ramona. Her family finds her soon after, and everyone is happy to be together again.
At Aunt Bea and Hobart's wedding, Ramona saves the day! She finds the wedding ring that Howie dropped. At the party, Beezus and Henry share a kiss and dance. Robert also gets a job offer from Ramona's school. Mrs. Meachum recommended him to be the new art teacher after seeing the mural he and Ramona made. Ramona is thrilled that her family won't have to move. Robert and Dorothy also make up. Before Bea and Hobart leave for their honeymoon in Alaska, Ramona gives Bea a locket with her school picture. Bea tells Ramona that she is "extraordinary."
