Playing Career Highlights
Ramón Calderé was born in Vila-rodona, a town in Catalonia, Spain. He started his football journey in the youth system of his local club, FC Barcelona. He spent several years playing for their reserve team, FC Barcelona Atlètic.
He made his debut in La Liga with Real Valladolid in the 1980–81 season. This was a short loan period for him.
Joining FC Barcelona's First Team
When he was 25, Calderé joined Barcelona's main team. He helped them win the league title in his very first season, even though he wasn't always a starting player.
In the summer of 1988, he moved to Real Betis, another top-flight team. His team was relegated to a lower league in his first season there.
Calderé retired from playing football in 1993 when he was 34 years old. His last club was UE Sant Andreu, which was also in his home province.
International Appearances
Calderé played 18 games for the Spanish national team and scored seven goals. He was a key player in the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. In that tournament, he scored two goals in a 3–0 win against Algeria during the group stage.
He made his first appearance for Spain on April 30, 1985, in a World Cup qualifying match against Wales. He was also chosen for the UEFA Euro 1988 squad, but he did not play in any matches during that tournament.
Under-21 Success
Calderé also played for the Spanish under-21 team. He helped them win the 1986 European Championships. He was an "overaged player" for this team, meaning he was slightly older than the usual age limit but allowed to play. He could not play in the finals of that tournament because of an injury.
1986 World Cup Incident
During the 1986 World Cup, Calderé became ill with a common travel sickness. The team doctor gave him medicine to help him feel better. After a match against Northern Ireland, he had a drug test. The test showed a positive result.
However, Calderé was not punished. The medical staff explained that the medicine was given to him to treat his illness and prevent him from becoming severely dehydrated. Because of this explanation, he was allowed to continue playing. He then scored two goals in the next match against Algeria.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Ramón Calderé became a football coach. He has coached many different teams, mostly smaller ones in Spain's lower leagues.
Some of the clubs he has managed include CE Premià (twice), UE Cornellà, CF Gavà, UE Castelldefels, CF Badalona, AD Ceuta, CF Reus Deportiu, CD Teruel, CF Palencia, and Burgos CF.
Besides coaching in Spain, Calderé also worked briefly as an assistant coach for Sint-Truidense V.V. in the Belgian Pro League. He worked there with his fellow Spaniard, Tintín Márquez.
