Ramón Sagredo's Artistic Journey
Early Training and Success
Ramón Sagredo studied art at the San Carlos Academy from 1854 to 1859. This was a very important art school in Mexico. He became known for his painting called Jesus on the road to Emmaus. This painting even received good reviews from famous people, like the Cuban poet José Martí.
Working for Emperor Maximilian
Emperor Maximilian of Mexico supported Ramón Sagredo's work. This meant the Emperor helped pay for his projects. Sagredo decorated the Imperial Palace, which is now called the National Palace. He painted a large portrait of Vicente Guerrero, an important Mexican hero. He also worked with Pelegrí Clavé on the dome, or cupola, of the La Profesa church. Sadly, that part of the church was later damaged in a fire.
A New Path: Photography
After a difficult time in Mexico called the Reform War, Ramón Sagredo's money started to run low. Many artists at that time began to try new things. Ramón Sagredo decided to explore photography. He would paint over large photographs. This was much cheaper than creating a full painting from scratch.
He worked with other photographers for a short time. He teamed up with Luis Veraza in 1864. Later, in 1865, he joined the Valleto brothers to form a company called Sagredo, Valleto y Ca.. Eventually, he opened his own photography studio in Mexico City.
