While at USC, Kleiser was friends with another future famous director, George Lucas. Kleiser even acted in one of Lucas's student films called Freiheit. Kleiser's own student film, Peege (1973), was a big success. It was about the special connection between a grandson and his grandmother. The film won awards and was later chosen by the U.S. Library of Congress to be preserved in the National Film Registry, a collection of America's most important films.
Starting a Career in TV
After college, Kleiser began directing television movies. He directed The Boy in the Plastic Bubble (1976), which starred a young actor named John Travolta. Kleiser also directed the Emmy Award-winning TV movie The Gathering (1977).

Directing Famous Feature Films
After the success of Grease, Kleiser directed many other popular movies. He took audiences to a deserted island with Brooke Shields in The Blue Lagoon (1980) and directed the sci-fi adventure Flight of the Navigator (1986).
