Randall Delgado's Baseball Journey
Starting with the Atlanta Braves
Randall Delgado started his professional baseball career in 2011. He played for the Double-A Mississippi Braves team. On June 17, 2011, he made his first appearance in Major League Baseball. This happened when a regular pitcher, Tommy Hanson, was unable to play.
Delgado's first game was a bit challenging. He allowed three runs in four innings and his team lost. After this, he went back to the minor leagues. He later moved up to the Triple-A team in Gwinnett.
He was called back to the Major Leagues in August 2011. Again, he filled in for an injured player. He pitched very well against the San Francisco Giants, not allowing any hits for six innings. In his seven starts that year, he had a 1-1 record with a 2.83 ERA.
In 2012, Randall got his first hit in Major League Baseball. This happened on April 22 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He finished the 2012 season with a record of 4 wins and 9 losses.
Playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks
After the 2012 season, Delgado was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks. This trade involved several players moving between the Braves and the Diamondbacks. In 2013, he split his time between the minor leagues and the Diamondbacks' main team. He pitched 116.1 innings and had a 5-7 record with a 4.26 ERA.
From 2014 onwards, Delgado mostly pitched as a "long reliever" for the Diamondbacks. This means he would come into games to pitch several innings when needed. He also started games occasionally.
His best season was in 2015. That year, he had a career-best ERA of 3.25 in 64 games. In 2018, he had an injury early in the season. He returned to play in July but was later released by the team. He then signed a new minor-league contract with them. He became a free agent in October 2018.
Other Teams and International Play
After leaving the Diamondbacks, Delgado played for several other teams. He signed a minor league deal with the Chicago White Sox in 2019 but was released shortly after. He then played for the Kansas City T-Bones, an independent league team.
Later in 2019, the New York Yankees bought his contract. He played for their Triple-A team, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. He pitched in 10 games for them before becoming a free agent again.
In 2022, Delgado joined the Gastonia Honey Hunters in another independent league. He had a 3.23 ERA in 16 games. In 2023, he played for the Lake Country DockHounds. He had a good record of 5 wins and 2 losses with them.
In August 2023, Delgado's contract was bought by the Uni-President Lions in Taiwan's Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL). He played 7 games there, winning 5 and losing 2, with a 2.91 ERA. Most recently, in 2024, he played for the Leones de Yucatán in the Mexican League.
Pitching Style
Randall Delgado uses five different types of pitches when he plays. These include:
- A four-seam fastball, which is a very fast pitch.
- A two-seam fastball, which moves a bit differently than the four-seam.
- A curveball, which curves as it approaches the batter.
- A changeup, which is thrown slower to trick the batter.
- An occasional slider, which he uses against right-handed batters.
International Appearances
Randall Delgado has also represented his home country, Panama, in international baseball. He was chosen to play for Panama in the 2023 World Baseball Classic qualification tournament.
