Randall Delgado's Baseball Journey
Starting with the Atlanta Braves
Randall Delgado began his 2011 season playing for the Double-A Mississippi Braves. On June 16, 2011, the Braves announced that Randall would join the Major League team. He was set to make his first big league start on June 17 against the Texas Rangers.
This chance came because the regular Braves pitcher, Tommy Hanson, was unable to play. Randall's first game was a bit tough. He gave up three runs over four innings and his team lost. After this, Randall went back to the Mississippi Braves. Later, he was moved up to the Braves' Triple-A team in Gwinnett.
He was called up to the Major Leagues again in August. Once more, he started a game because Tommy Hanson was injured. Facing the San Francisco Giants, Randall pitched six innings without giving up any hits. He left the game after giving up a home run in the seventh inning. He did not get a win or a loss for this game. He was sent back to Gwinnett the next day. In 7 starts, Randall finished the season with 1 win and 1 loss, and a 2.83 ERA.
Randall got his first Major League hit on April 22, 2012. It was against the Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy. On July 15, Randall was sent back to Triple-A Gwinnett. For the 2012 season, Randall had 4 wins and 9 losses in 17 starts and 1 relief game.
Playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks
After the 2012 season, the Braves traded Randall Delgado to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Other players like Martín Prado and Nick Ahmed were also part of this trade. In return, the Braves received Justin Upton and Chris Johnson.
Randall spent the 2013 season playing for both the minor league teams and the Diamondbacks. In 20 games, he started 19 times. He had 5 wins and 7 losses with a 4.26 ERA. After 2013, he mostly pitched from the bullpen for Arizona. He often came in to pitch for many innings or to start a game when needed.
In 2014, Randall was ejected from a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. This happened after he hit Andrew McCutchen with a fastball. Warnings had been given earlier in the game. This was because Paul Goldschmidt had been hit the night before. Randall was not suspended by Major League Baseball for this event.
His best season was in 2015. He had a career-best ERA of 3.25 in 64 games. In 2018, Randall hurt his side during spring training. He was placed on the disabled list at the start of the season. He returned to play on July 8. Randall was later removed from the team on July 25, 2018. He was released by the Diamondbacks on July 31. However, he re-signed with them for a minor league contract on August 18. He became a free agent on October 29, 2018.
Other Teams and Leagues
On January 12, 2019, Randall signed a minor league deal with the Chicago White Sox. He was released on March 20, 2019. He then played for the Kansas City T-Bones in an independent league.
Later in 2019, the New York Yankees bought his contract. He was sent to their Triple-A team, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. He struggled there with 2 wins and 5 losses. He became a free agent again on November 4.
In 2022, Randall played for the Gastonia Honey Hunters in another independent league. He had a 3.23 ERA in 16 games. In 2023, he joined the Lake Country DockHounds. He had 5 wins and 2 losses in 10 starts.
On August 4, 2023, Randall's contract was bought by the Uni-President Lions. This team plays in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) in Taiwan. In his only season there, Randall played in 7 games. He had 5 wins and 2 losses with a 2.91 ERA.
In 2024, Randall signed with the Leones de Yucatán in the Mexican League. He had 3 wins and 2 losses in 8 starts. He was released by the team on June 18.
