Randy Edwini-Bonsu (born April 20, 1990) is a Canadian soccer player. He played as a forward, which means he was usually trying to score goals for his team. He last played for FC Edmonton in the Canadian Premier League.
Randy's Soccer Journey
Starting Out in Canada
Randy Edwini-Bonsu started playing soccer when his family moved from Ghana to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in 2002. He played for the Green & Gold Soccer Club. From 2004 to 2006, he was a member of the Alberta provincial team. He helped his team win a gold medal at the 2006 Canadian All-Star Championship.
He also played for Southwest United, a youth soccer club. In 2006, his team won an Alberta provincial title. They also finished second at the Canadian Club Championship. In 2007, Randy trained with the youth teams of a French club called FC Metz.
Playing for Vancouver Whitecaps
Later in 2007, Randy joined the youth academy of the Vancouver Whitecaps. He played for their development team, Vancouver Whitecaps Residency. He helped the team reach the Conference Finals in their first season. He scored nine goals in 15 games for them.
After the 2008 season, Randy joined the main Vancouver Whitecaps team. He made his first professional appearance on August 20, 2008. The game was a 0–0 tie against the Seattle Sounders.
Playing in Europe
In 2011, Randy played for AC Oulu, a team in Finland's second-tier league. He was named the league's Player of the Month in September 2011.
On November 22, 2011, Randy signed with Eintracht Braunschweig, a club in Germany. He had impressed them by scoring four goals in two trial games. He made his debut in Germany on February 5, 2012. He came on as a substitute in a game against Eintracht Frankfurt.
On March 4, 2012, Randy played his first home game for Eintracht Braunschweig. He came on as a substitute and helped his team win 3–2 against Hansa Rostock. Fans even voted him "Player of the Day" for that match. However, he didn't become a regular player for the club. His contract was not renewed after the 2012–13 season.
After six months without a club, he joined Stuttgarter Kickers in January 2014. This team played in Germany's third division. In June 2015, he moved to another team in the same league, VfR Aalen. He signed a contract with them until 2017. He later played for FC Homburg and Tennis Borussia Berlin in Germany.
Back to Canada with FC Edmonton
In November 2018, Randy signed with FC Edmonton, a team in the new Canadian Premier League. He made his debut for Edmonton on May 4 against Valour FC. On November 4, FC Edmonton announced that Randy would be leaving the club.
Randy's International Career
Playing for Canada's Youth Teams
Randy played for Canada's national youth soccer teams. On November 12, 2008, he was called to a Canada U-20 (Under 20) training camp. He represented Canada at the 2007 CONCACAF U17 Tournament in Kingston, Jamaica.
He also played in the 2009 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. He scored three goals in three games, tying for the most goals in the tournament. In January 2010, he was called up to Canada's U-23 team.
Playing for Canada's Senior Team
On January 31, 2010, Randy played his first game for the Canada men's national soccer team. This was a friendly match against Jamaica. He didn't play for the senior team again until March 22, 2013. This was another friendly game, this time against Japan.
On June 27, 2013, Randy was chosen to be part of Canada's team for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He scored his first goal for Canada in a friendly game against Puerto Rico on March 30, 2015.
