Rankin is a small village located in Vermilion County, Illinois, in the United States. It's part of the wider Danville, Illinois area. In 2020, about 495 people lived there.

Discovering Rankin's Past
Rankin got its name from W. A. Rankin, who owned a lot of land in the area. In 1872, there was a disagreement about where to put a new railroad station. Mr. Rankin wanted it in his area.
The Railroad Station Dispute
W. H. Pells, who was part of the Lake Erie and Western Railroad, wanted the station in a different spot. His preferred location was called Pellsville, about a mile and a half west of Rankin. After several years, Mr. Rankin's location was chosen for the station.
Railroad Shops and Community Changes
Rankin used to have railroad maintenance shops. These were places where trains were fixed and kept in good condition. However, in 1932, these shops moved to Frankfort, Indiana. Some people who worked at the shops moved with them to Frankfort.
Celebrating 100 Years
In 1972, the village of Rankin celebrated its 100th birthday! To mark this special event, a small book was created. It contained short stories about many of the families who lived in the town.
Rankin's Veterans Memorial
On Main Street in Rankin, you'll find a special monument called the Veterans Memorial. It was built in 1996 to honor people from the Rankin area who served in the United States military.
How the Memorial Was Built
Local people worked together to make this memorial happen. A big thank you goes to Margaret "Maggie" Olson Diskin, who graduated from RTHS. She was the main person who led this important project.
Honoring Service Members
The monument has the names of over 700 men and women from the Rankin area. These brave individuals served the United States in different conflicts and times of peace. Their names include those who served in the Civil War, Spanish–American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Lebanon Conflict, Vietnam War, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
