Early Life and Childhood
Rano Karno was born on 8 October 1960 in Jakarta, Indonesia. His father, Soekarno M. Noer, was also an actor. His family came from Minangkabau (West Sumatra) and Betawi backgrounds.
Rano grew up in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. His family was quite poor because his father did not earn much money. Rano often joked that his family had to share one plate of food, like in a popular song. Even though money was tight, he was able to finish school because his school fees were cut in half.
To escape his family's struggles, Rano often went to a library run by Balai Pustaka (a government-owned publisher). There, he loved to read classic Indonesian literature books. These included novels like Salah Asuhan by Abdul Muis and the traditional story Malin Kundang.
Entertainment Career
Rano Karno's love for reading helped him get his first acting job. When he was ten years old, he tried out for a movie called Malin Kundang. He noticed that the story in the audition was different from the book. He bravely said, "That's not how the story goes!" The director, D. Djajakusuma, was very impressed that Rano knew the story so well and gave him the part.
At first, his father was worried about Rano becoming an actor. He didn't want Rano to face the same financial difficulties he had.
After Malin Kundang, Rano Karno starred in Si Doel Anak Betawi (Doel, the Betawi Child) in 1972. This movie was very successful. He then acted in several other films, such as Rio Anakku (Rio, My Child; 1974) and Di Mana Kau Ibu? (Where Are You Mother?; 1974). In 1979, he played the character Galih in Arizal's film Gita Cinta dari SMA (Love Song from High School).
In 1990, Rano Karno started directing movies and TV shows. He created a TV series based on Si Doel Anak Betawi, called Si Doel Anak Sekolahan. Studios initially thought it was too "local," but it became extremely popular. The show ran for six successful seasons.
Rano Karno also wrote a book called The Last Barongsai, which was published in 2010. In the same year, he released another film he directed, Satu Jam Saja (Just One Hour).
Political Career
Rano Karno has also had an important career in politics. From 1997 to 2002, he was a member of the People's Consultative Assembly, which is a part of Indonesia's government. From 2002 to 2007, he worked as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, helping to promote reading and education for children.
In 2008, Rano Karno ran for the position of deputy regent (wakil bupati) in Tangerang. He ran with the current regent, Ismet Iskandar. They won the election and served together. Even while working in politics, Rano Karno continued to be involved in the entertainment world.
In 2011, Rano Karno decided to run for Deputy Governor of Banten province. He joined Ratu Atut Chosiyah as her running mate. On 30 October, they were announced as the winners of the election, getting 50% of the votes. Rano Karno officially became Deputy Governor of Banten on 11 January 2012.
Later, the Governor, Ratu Atut, faced legal issues. Because of this, Rano Karno took over her role and became the Governor of Banten in 2015. He tried to run for governor again in the 2017 election, but he was not re-elected.
