Tangerang is a large city in the Banten province of Indonesia. It's located right next to Jakarta, the capital city. Tangerang is the biggest city in Banten by population. It is also the sixth largest city in Indonesia, if you don't count Jakarta.
The city covers about 164.55 square kilometers. In 2023, about 1.9 million people lived there. Tangerang is not just a place where people sleep after working in Jakarta. It has many factories and business areas. Because it's close to Jakarta and has good roads, many people want to live or invest here.
Tangerang and its neighbor, South Tangerang, have many new areas built by big developers. These areas, like BSD City and Alam Sutera, are now important centers for business, shopping, and education.
Tangerang is also home to Soekarno–Hatta International Airport. This is Indonesia's main airport and serves the Jakarta area. The city is a big industrial hub on Java island, with over 1,000 factories. Many global companies have their plants here. Tangerang is usually hot and humid. Some parts of the city are swamps, especially near the airport. It also has the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) BSD City, which is Indonesia's largest convention center.
Because Jakarta has grown so much, Tangerang has become part of its big urban area. Many people who live in Tangerang travel to Jakarta for work. Many modern neighborhoods have been built in Tangerang. These areas have their own shopping malls, private schools, and shops. The government is also building more toll roads to help with traffic.
Some big companies, like Unilever Indonesia, have moved their offices to Tangerang. They do this to avoid the heavy traffic and crowds in Jakarta.

History of Tangerang
How Tangerang Began
Long ago, in 1668, the Sultan of Banten created a large area west of the Untung Jawa River. He moved many people there to live. The Sultan appointed two leaders, Raden Sena Pati and Kyai Demang. But he later removed them from power.
Later, a new leader named Kyai Dipati Soera Dielaga became the ruler of Tangerang. He and his son asked for protection from the Dutch East India Company (VOC). They were given land on the east side of the river. When Banten attacked, Soeradilaga helped the VOC fight them off. Because of his help, he was given the special title Raden Aria Suryamanggala.
In 1684, Tangerang officially became part of the VOC's territory. This meant Banten could not control Tangerang anymore. The VOC built guard posts along the Tangerang river to protect against attacks. One of these posts became a strong fort. People started calling Tangerang "the Citadel" because of this fort. However, by 1812, the fort was no longer taken care of and fell apart.
Recent History of the City
In October 1945, a Muslim group called Laskar Hitam was formed in Tangerang. They wanted to create an Islamic nation in Indonesia. This group later joined a rebel movement.
Tangerang officially became its own city on February 27, 1993. Before that, it was just an administrative area within the larger Tangerang Regency. In 2007, the city government asked its employees to follow Islamic dress codes.
