South Tangerang (Indonesian: Tangerang Selatan) is a big city in the Banten province of Indonesia. It is about 30 kilometers (19 miles) southwest of Jakarta. This city is part of the larger Greater Jakarta metropolitan area.
South Tangerang became its own city on November 26, 2008. Before that, it was part of Tangerang Regency. In mid-2023, about 1.4 million people lived here. The city covers an area of 164.85 square kilometers (63.65 sq mi). It is the second-largest city in Banten by population. South Tangerang has grown very quickly. It is not just a city where people live and travel to Jakarta for work. It also has many business areas and shopping centers. These were built by private companies.
Some well-known planned towns in South Tangerang include Alam Sutera, BSD City, and Bintaro Jaya. These towns have many facilities. You can find business centers, shopping malls, and international schools there. The land prices in South Tangerang are currently the highest among Jakarta's nearby cities.

History
South Tangerang became an independent city on November 26, 2008. This was done to help improve government services. It also helped with construction projects and community services. The goal was to use the area's natural resources better. This way, people living there could have a better life.
Situ Gintung Flood
The Situ Gintung reservoir was built a long time ago in 1933. It is located in the Cirendeu area. A dam up to 16 meters (52 feet) high surrounded it. On March 27, 2009, this dam broke. This caused a flood that sadly led to the loss of at least 93 lives.
Demographics
Languages
The main languages spoken in South Tangerang are Betawi and Tangerang Sundanese. Betawi is used in most parts of the city. However, in the western area along the Cisadane River, people mostly speak Sundanese. This is common in villages near the river, especially in North Serpong.
Some communities in the western part are changing their language. This means fewer people are speaking Sundanese. This change is happening in Serpong, Setu, and some villages in western Pondok Aren. There is even a village in Setu called Keranggan. Most people there used to speak Sundanese. Now, only a few parts of the village still use it a lot.
Administrative Districts
South Tangerang is divided into seven main areas called kecamatan (districts). These districts are further split into 54 urban villages, known as kelurahan. The central part of South Tangerang is the Ciputat district. The western districts, like Setu, Serpong, and Serpong Utara, have fewer people living in them. The eastern districts, such as Pamulang, Ciputat, Ciputat Timur, and Pondok Aren, are much more crowded. The table below shows details about each district.

Transportation
Most people in South Tangerang travel by land. Buses, minibuses, and taxis are common ways to get around. Public transport often goes to Jakarta. This is because many people from South Tangerang travel to Jakarta for work every day. There are also special feeder buses that connect to TransJakarta services. These buses go from areas like Bumi Serpong Damai and Bintaro Jaya to central Jakarta.
Here are some of the main roads and highways in the city:
- Main Roads:
- Jl. Raya Serpong
- Jl. Pahlawan Seribu, BSD City
- Jl. Kapten Soebianto Djojohadjikusumo, BSD City
- Jl. Pelayangan, BSD City
- Jl. Ir. H. Juanda, Ciputat
- Jl. Ciater Raya
- Jl. Alam Sutera Boulevard
- Jl. Boulevard Bintaro Jaya
- Highways (Toll Roads):
The city also has a commuter train service called KRL Commuterline. This is helpful for people who work in Jakarta. There are five train stations in South Tangerang: Jurangmangu, Pondok Ranji, Rawa Buntu, Serpong, and Sudimara. All these stations are on the KAI Commuter Rangkasbitung Line.
There are two main toll roads serving the city. These are the Jakarta–Serpong Toll Road and the Jakarta–Tangerang Toll Road. More toll roads are also being planned. For example, the Serpong-Balaraja Toll Road will extend the Jakarta-Serpong toll road. Also, the Jakarta Outer Ring Road 2 will soon connect the city to Soekarno–Hatta International Airport. The Kunciran-Serpong Toll Road and Serpong-Cinere Toll Road are newer additions to the city's transport system.
Pondok Cabe Airport is the only airport within South Tangerang. It is used for both military and civilian flights. The national oil company, PT Pertamina, owns this airport. It is also a maintenance base for Pelita Air Service, which is also owned by PT Pertamina.
Becak (cycle rickshaws) can still be found in some parts of the city. These are not allowed in Jakarta because they are slow and can cause traffic jams. However, since South Tangerang is outside the main city of Jakarta, becak are allowed here.
In April 2015, a new public transport service started. It is called Corridor-2 of Trans Anggrek Circle Line. This service is similar to TransJakarta. It connects Pondok Cabe Terminal to Rawa Buntu Station. It was free for a while. More routes are planned to be added step by step.
