Rarriwuy Hick is an amazing Aboriginal Australian actress. She has won awards for her acting. You might know her from popular TV shows like Redfern Now, Cleverman, Wentworth, and True Colours.

Early Life and Education

Rarriwuy Hick was born in Sydney, Australia, around 1991. She grew up in two very different places. One was Lilyfield, a suburb in Sydney. The other was Dhalinybuy, an Aboriginal community in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory.

She learned to speak Yolŋu Matha and other Australian Aboriginal languages first. After that, she learned English. She can speak seven different dialects! Her mother, Janet Munyarryun, is a Yolngu woman. She was one of the first members of the famous Bangarra Dance Theatre.

Rarriwuy's mother inspired her to love dance and art. Rarriwuy went to a Catholic girls' high school. She was so interested in dance that she even started her own dance group there. In 2009, she began studying at the National Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Association (NAISDA) Dance College. While she was studying, she was asked to try out for a play called Wrong Skin. She got the part and performed in the play while still going to college.

Acting Career Highlights

Rarriwuy Hick has starred in many TV shows. She was in two episodes of Redfern Now (2012–2013). She also played Ruby Mitchell in the show Wentworth. Her character first appeared in season six. She continued playing Ruby Mitchell in the show's last season too.

In 2022, Rarriwuy played the main character, Detective Toni Alma, in the TV miniseries True Colours. Her character returns to her hometown in Central Australia after being away for a long time. One reviewer said her acting in this show was her "career-best."

In 2023, Rarriwuy joined the cast of the popular show Home and Away. She played the role of Elandra Hudson. In 2024, she was announced as part of the cast for a new movie called Kangaroo. She was also named as a cast member for the second season of the ABC drama Mystery Road: Origin.

Dance and Theatre Work

Rarriwuy is also a talented dancer and theatre performer. She created a dance group called Yapa Mala and was in charge of its dances. In 2011, she acted in a theatre play called Bloodland.

In 2016, Rarriwuy starred in a new version of the play The Golden Age by Louis Nowra. This play was put on by the Sydney Theatre Company. Her acting and dancing in the play were highly praised.

Other Activities and Advocacy

In 2018, Rarriwuy Hick started a social media campaign. She used the hashtag #ourkidsbelongwithfamilies. This became a very important message for Indigenous Australians. It was a way for them to fight to keep their families together. They wanted to prevent authorities from removing and resettling children away from their families.
