History of Raub, Indiana
Raub was founded on April 8, 1872, by a businessman named Adams D. Raub. He chose a spot near the railroad, which had just been built the year before. The community first had 71 land lots.
The very first house in Raub belonged to Ira Perkins, built even before the railroad arrived. Another house was built by A. Houser in late 1871. Around the same time, Raub got its first store, selling groceries and other small items. In 1873, Samuel White opened a general store. Over the next ten years, more businesses opened, including a hardware store, a drug store, a doctor's office, and a grain elevator.
A post office was opened in Raub in 1872. It served the community for many years until it closed in 1967.
Early Religious Services
The first organized church services in Raub began in 1872, the same year the town was founded. The first minister was W.H. Hickman, who was a "Circuit Rider" – a minister who traveled to different communities. In 1875, the group that Rev. Hickman led formed the Raub Evangelical United Brethren Church. They hired J.H. Bradshaw to build their church building. This building is still used today by the Raub United Methodist Church. In 1968, the Evangelical United Brethren Church joined with the Methodist Church, and the church in Raub changed its name slightly.
