Raul Germano Brandão (born March 12, 1867, in Porto, Portugal – died December 5, 1930, in Lisbon, Portugal) was a famous Portuguese writer, journalist, and military officer. He was known for writing very real stories. His words also had a beautiful, poetic style.
Raul Brandão was born in Foz do Douro, a part of Porto. He spent most of his childhood there. His family were sailors, so the ocean and people who worked on ships often appeared in his books.
Raul Brandão's Life Story
Raul Brandão finished his high school studies in 1891. After that, he joined the military. He began a long career working for the Ministry of War. While he worked there, he also wrote for newspapers and published many books.
In 1896, Brandão was sent to Guimarães. There, he met the woman who would become his wife. They got married the next year and made Guimarães their home. Even though he lived in Guimarães, Brandão spent a lot of time in Lisbon.
He retired from the army in 1912. After retiring, he started his most active period of writing. He wrote many articles for newspapers and published many books. Raul Brandão passed away on December 5, 1930, when he was 63 years old.
