Club Career Highlights
Early Years at Râmnicu Vâlcea
When Raul was seven, a coach named Cristi Bora saw him at a tryout. He then joined the Râmnicu Vâlcea team. As a young player, he had some injuries. He hurt his leg falling from a bus and later broke a bone in his lower leg (tibia) after slipping on ice. He played with Mihai Costea, who later became his teammate at Steaua București. Even though he trained with Râmnicu Vâlcea's youth teams, in 2005, his coach thought he wasn't good enough.
Time with Unirea Urziceni
In the summer of 2005, Rusescu joined Liga II team Unirea Urziceni. He didn't play much in his first year. However, his team was promoted to Liga I, the top league in Romania.
Loan Spells and Growth
After Unirea Urziceni moved to Liga I, Rusescu was loaned to Dunărea Giurgiu. Even though he was not yet 18, he quickly became a regular player. He scored 13 goals that season. For the 2007–08 season, he was loaned again to CS Otopeni, a Liga II club. He helped them get promoted to Liga I by scoring 4 goals in 20 games.
Winning the League Title
In his first year playing in Liga I with Unirea Urziceni, Rusescu helped his team win the 2008–09 league title. This win earned them a spot in the UEFA Champions League group stages. He scored 5 goals in 23 games that season.
In the 2009–10 season, Rusescu scored 8 goals in 29 games. Unirea Urziceni finished second in the league. They also earned eight points in the 2009–10 Champions League group stage. After their manager left, Rusescu played as a winger and didn't perform as well.
Joining Steaua București
On May 4, 2011, it was announced that Rusescu had signed with Steaua București. He played his first Liga I game for Steaua on July 31 against CS Mioveni, scoring his first goal for the club in the same match. In the next game, he scored again against Universitatea Cluj. He scored his first European goal for Steaua against Schalke 04 in the 2011–12 UEFA Europa League.
Hero Status and Key Goals
On December 5, Rusescu scored two amazing goals against Steaua's biggest rival, Dinamo București. This win ended Steaua's seven-year streak without a win at Dinamo's stadium. Fans and the media called him a hero. In the next Europa League group stage match, Rusescu scored again from a penalty kick. This helped his team beat AEK Larnaca and move on to the next round. By the end of 2011, Rusescu was Steaua's top scorer. He had seven goals in Liga I and two in the Europa League group stage.
On March 7, 2013, Rusescu scored a penalty goal against Chelsea at the Arena Națională. This put Steaua ahead 1–0 in the Europa League round of 16. On March 12, Rusescu scored a goal against Universitatea Cluj. He scored again on March 18 against Astra Ploiești in a 2–1 win. On April 8, Rusescu scored the second goal in a 4–1 victory against Sportul Studențesc.
Time with Sevilla and Loans
On June 13, 2013, Rusescu moved to the Spanish La Liga club Sevilla. He signed a five-year contract. On August 20, 2015, Sevilla announced that Rusescu had ended his contract with the club.
Loan to Braga
At the end of 2013, Rusescu was loaned to the Portuguese Primeira Liga club Braga. He made his Braga debut on January 6, 2014, in a 2–0 win against Arouca. On January 10, he scored two goals for Braga in his Primeira Liga debut. This was a 3–0 win over Vitória de Guimarães.
Return to Steaua on Loan
On September 1, 2014, Rusescu returned to Steaua București for a season-long loan. This was just one year after he had left Steaua for Sevilla.
