History of Ravena
The village of Ravena became an official village, or incorporated, in 1914. Before this, it was known as "Coeymans Junction." The name was changed to "Ravena" to avoid confusion. There was another small community nearby called "Coeymans Landing."
In 1894, a post office opened in Coeymans Junction. It was given the name Ravena. It's not completely clear where the name "Ravena" came from. Some people think it's because the village is close to cliffs. These cliffs might have made people call the area "the ravine." Others believe the name came from a brand of flour called Raven.
A historic building, the Israel Shear House, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
