Rawshan Ara Bachchu (born December 17, 1932 – died December 3, 2019) was an important activist from Bangladesh. She is well-known for her role in the Bengali Language Movement in 1952. This movement fought for Bengali to be recognized as an official language. For her efforts, she received the Anannya Top Ten Awards in 2009.
Early Life and Beginnings
Rawshan Ara Bachchu's family came from a place called Kulaura Upazila in the Moulvibazar District. She was a student at Brojomohun College. In 1947, she helped create a group called the State Language Action Council. She formed this group with other university students and a cultural organization called Tamaddun Majlish. About seven or eight students joined her in this important effort.
Role in the Language Movement
In 1950, Rawshan Ara Bachchu started studying at the University of Dhaka. She became involved in student politics, joining a group called the Gonotantrik Pragotishil Chhatra Front. This group worked for democratic progress among students.
In April 1950, she spoke on a radio program. She argued that women should be involved in politics and have their voices heard. Her most famous work was during the Bengali Language Movement. On January 27, 1952, the Prime Minister, Khawaja Nazimuddin, declared that Urdu would be the only official language of Pakistan.
Rawshan Ara Bachchu strongly disagreed with this decision. On January 30, 1952, she took part in a big meeting. This meeting was held at Amtola, a place at the University of Dhaka. Students gathered there to protest the Prime Minister's declaration. She was a brave voice for her language and her people.
Later Life and Passing
Rawshan Ara Bachchu passed away on December 3, 2019. She is remembered for her courage and her important role in the history of Bangladesh.
