Raymond Lee Cunningham (born January 17, 1905 – died July 30, 2005) was an American baseball player. He played as a third baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals in Major League Baseball. Ray played in 1931 and 1932. He batted and threw with his right hand. Ray was from Mesquite, Texas. His baseball career was short because of an injury. He hurt his arm while making a throw to first base.
Ray Cunningham's Baseball Journey
Ray Cunningham was 26 years old when he joined the St. Louis Cardinals in 1931. He was a rookie, meaning it was his first time playing in the big leagues. He earned $500 a year. During his time with the Cardinals, Ray shared a room with two famous players. These players were Dizzy Dean and Pepper Martin.
Ray's career in Major League Baseball lasted only two seasons. He played in 14 games. His batting average was .154. He had one RBI (which means he helped a teammate score a run). He did not hit any home runs.
Life After Baseball
After his baseball career ended, Ray Cunningham worked as a salesman. He also worked for an oil company. He lived a very long life. In 2004, he became known as the oldest living former Major League Baseball player. He received this honor after Paul Hopkins passed away. Paul Hopkins was a former pitcher who was 99 years old.
Ray was honored at the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame. He received a special plaque for his life in baseball. He always loved baseball and watched the Houston Astros games every day.
