Ray Wesley Lucas (born October 2, 1908, in Springfield, Ohio – died October 9, 1969, in Harrison, Michigan) was an American professional baseball player. He was a pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB). After his time in the big leagues, he also worked as a manager and scout in minor league baseball.
Ray Lucas: A Baseball Player
Ray Lucas was a right-handed pitcher. This means he threw the baseball with his right arm. He also batted right-handed. He played for two famous teams during his career. These were the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Playing in the Major Leagues
Ray Lucas played in Major League Baseball for parts of five seasons. His first game was on September 28, 1929, with the New York Giants. He played for them until 1931. After that, he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1933 and played there until 1934.
As a pitcher, his main job was to throw the ball to the batter. He played in 22 games during his MLB career. His win-loss record was 1 win and 1 loss. He also earned one save. A save is when a pitcher finishes a close game and helps their team win. His ERA was 5.79. ERA measures how many runs a pitcher allows per nine innings.
When he got a chance to bat, Ray Lucas did quite well. He had 3 hits in 9 tries. This gave him a batting average of .333. A batting average shows how often a player gets a hit.
Life After Major League Baseball
After playing in the major leagues, Ray Lucas continued his baseball career in the minor leagues. He pitched in the minor leagues from 1929 until 1941. He even managed some minor league teams. One team he managed was the Kinston Eagles.
His last two seasons as a player were his best. He won 37 games and lost 22 games in the West Texas–New Mexico League. His playing career ended earlier than expected. This was because he had a serious injury to his hand during a hunting accident.
After he stopped playing and managing, Ray Lucas became a scout. A scout's job is to find new talented players. He scouted for the Toledo Mud Hens team.
